Feedback And Millennials: Does It Really Make A Difference?
Popular commentary on millennials shows they need constant affirmation. A pat on the back, a prize for participation, or an endless supply of encouragement.
It’s modern-day life support.
If this is true, how can any young millennial survive in society without a morale-boosting shot in the arm every 15 minutes?
The commentary is wrong.
Feedback is, and must always be, about IMPROVEMENT.
Millennials are hungry to succeed in the marketplace. They want clear and specific instruction to build success upon success.
Feedback needs to push improvement.
Stop with the 360 review once a year. Effectively, you’re telling your employees “I only want you to grow once a year.”
Consider microfeedback — “think of it as performance assessment for Twitterholics — succinct and nearly real time.” (Meister and Willyerd, 2010)
As leaders, we should be able to give some constructive wisdom for improvement in 60 seconds or less.
